I thought I’d seen the most rare games out there until I found The Serpent today. And I mean it. Because when you have a game full of strangers, one of which picks you for a couple of things I might better not spoil you out…
Well, now that I actually see what the game is, it’s a bit different than I thought.
When I was attempting to play the game in windowed mode, the screen was all black except certain elements. So that beginning block area lacked people, and the later parts only showed the eyes and computer screen. I thought this was a game about literally being a snake or something. The ‘maze’ at the start was like a pet cage, the eyes that appeared were someone taking out from the cage… and… yeah. That was just bizarre.
Then of course I played in full screen and actually saw what was going on. That… was odd and amusing to me though, that I could completely misinterpret the game due to a glitch, heh.
I loved playing Wolfenstein 3D while being boned by a homosexual man, who then proceeds to… expulse genetic material all over the place, and other people.
*sigh* Why can’t I understand your games anymore, Mr. Lavelle? You make me feel stupid… :(
I’m not understanding the hate in the comments, Isn’t this supposed to be a message of sorts? Also I think you’ve realistically nailed what a certain VN with ‘…lay’ in the title comically tried doing, earning the title of ‘Rape Simulator’. I can only hope this is not from experience.
Just wanted to let you know that I had a controller issue with three of your games:this one, universal history of light and untitled. Character I am controlling goes left upward like the key is stuck constantly and I have to steer it by pressing right like a boat I can barely control. First I thought this was how it was meant to be but then I watched other people playing at youtube normally. I don’t know what could cause this, a weird unity issue perhaps?
I’m puzzled as to how anyone can think that this is brilliant or important. It’s gross, and pointless. Then again, I could be a simpleton and the graphic imagery carrying an heavy message might have gone right over my head.
Unnerving experience, brilliant sense of detachment. Feel quite affected by it, but I can’t pinpoint in what way.
People above looking for a ‘message’ are missing the point in my opinion. Stuff like this isn’t about having a heavy handed message. The best art is a culmination of creative work, a distillation of multiple strands of thought. If something has a thinly veiled ‘message’ then it’s usually quite a shallow piece of work. I don’t want to be told what to think- I want something that I can really think about and unravel myself.
Those with nasty things to say sure aren’t keeping opinions to themselves, so I suppose I shouldn’t either.
The Serpent is one of the very best games I played in 2014, no contest. I loved it, and I continue to play it every so often, though I struggle to put words to why it resonated with me.

Pretty rude, Alexander :(

Huh…that was pretty interesting. One of those rare gems that sticks out from the swarm of games today.
Particular, superb. One of my favourite virtual experience.
What the fuck did I just play.

one of my favourite things you’ve made stephen, really intense. thanks.
I must agree with Alexander. Seriously sir, get your shit together. It’s probably your worst creation so far.
Pat, I can only hope that it doesn’t stay that way for long :)

Stayed with me long after playing. Thanks for making this Stephen
Going with Alexander on this one. Ugh.

Okay, I figured it out, it was Vjoy driver causing this issue.
Cool, thanks for reporting the problem! Looks like you found a solution, so I get to not worry about it :)
Shocking.

very unsettling. interesting. kind of like a triptych (or quadtrych, maybe?) only of interactive segments.
I feel raped…
